Project 5 Box - Part 1

My first step in planning my 5-Box setup is working out what Role each character will fill. Since four of my five characters are Hybrids, I actually have a lot of options to play with. Firstly though, we follow the Number One rule of Multi-Boxing. The Tank is the only melee. This means the Shaman will be Resto or Elemental and the Druid will be Resto or Balance.

Tank.

Firstly my Pally will be my Tank. This is the main reason I rolled the Pally in the first place. 5-Boxing is made so much easier with an AOE Tank. You really have to follow the K.I.S.S Principle here. The Pally has the easiest skill set for Multi-Box tanking. It really is a Less is more situation.

DPS.

Well the obvious choice here is the Mage. My Second DPS will be an Elemental Shaman. It's my Third choice that has me undecided.

Healer.

I can now choose between a Resto Druid or a Resto Shaman. As it is, Pre Wrath, I think the Shaman would be a better choice, mainly due to Chain Heal. In Wrath, however, Druids also get an AoE Heal. Which one will be superior for 5-Man Healing? I really do not know. Of course the other consideration is which one will provide the most DPS. Is it better to have two totems of Wrath? Will Totems of Wrath and Moonkin Aura stack? Is Earth Shield that useful with a Pally Tank?

The Answer?

Honestly I am not sure. It is really a Fifty-Fifty decision right now. Personally I like the Resto Druid over the Balance when played as a stand alone character, but that's not really an issue when Boxing. I really just do not have the Shaman experience to make the best decision. It seems like Balance Druids will offer more DPS then Elemental Shamans, at least with the current beta build.

Hmmmm...

In the end, it's not that bigger deal. With the new Spell Power Statistic, swapping them over is just a Respec away.

If you have any thoughts, I would love to hear from you.

I am struggling with the same dilemma with regards to the tank.

My warrior was first 70, followed by a lock, priest, hunter and then my sweet little mage. Boosting the mage was why I started multi-boxing.

So I have a ready made team. however what I am finding is "that old chestnut" of tanking, the warrior is an awesome single target tank but gathering up mobs and holding their agro is just so much better with a tankadin... So *grumble* I have had to roll one (R.A.F to the rescue).

I personally don't find the remaining combination of DPS/heals to be a problem. The Hunter pet can emergency tank reasonably well (BC) and very well come WotLK and find her to be a great addition to the team.

But given I am one of the new kids on the block multi-boxing wise, take this with a grain of [Refined Deeprock Salt].

While I am not being as ambitious as you are, I feel your struggle.

I am currently only dual boxing toons. Mostly I am using a tank/DPS-.5 healer combos.

The final combos I decided on is a little strange to the people around me.

Combo 1 is

Prot Pali with a Shockadin DPS Pali. (Bet AOE tank with the best Single target healer makes sense)

Combo 2 is

Feral Druid with a Elemental Shammy. (Good AOE Tank with Group Heals)

Combo 3 is

DK DPS/BM Hunter (this is my PEW PEW Battlegrounds Blowup Face crew)

Most people want to know why I didn't pick either a pure DPS or Pure healer to go along with the two tanks. My feeling was since I was going to be specing both to be as good as possible AOE tanks I wanted a class that while good support and has good healing, would also be able to provide a much needed DPS boost.
