Learn2Key Bind

A friend of mine is a self confessed noob. Some may think this is a bad thing, but since he knows he is no good he accepts he has a lot to learn. This is so much better than the person who cannot play but thinks they are god’s gift to Warcraft.

The Basics.

I caught up with my friend on the weekend and was watching him play. After watching him for a little bit, it was easy to establish how he could improve drastically just by changing his key placement. He plays a Rogue. One thing I noticed was he clicked his control and “Oh Shit” abilities, Vanish, Blind, Gouge etc. There was always over a second or two wasted in remembering where he had to click and dragging his mouse over there.

Recommendations.

After chatting with him a little about how he plays, we discussed his bindings. I think this fits into most players, until they decided to complex combinations to reduce buttons and binding even more. This is what we came up with.

Keys 1-5 are used for frequent abilities.
Shift 1-5 are used for less frequent abilities.
Q and E, including Shift Q and E, are ideal for the Oh Shit and CC abilities that you need to have there at an instant.
Make sure you bind your Mouse Buttons as well as the Tilde “~” Key.

In the short term it may take a while to get used to the new layout. In the end however the improvements will be dramatic.

Custom Keyboards.

I was lucky enough to get a Merc Stealth Keyboard for Christmas of my fantastic parents;).

There are also other variants like:

and

I personally think these Keyboards are fantastic for Warcraft or just for any Gamer in general.

I must admit though, I love my Gadgets.

I tend to think I've got Q and E bound for strafing - do you rebind these somewhere else?

As a healer I've somehow ended up with main healing spells at the 8 to = end of the top row, with shift / control variations for downranking / trinket macros respectively. 1 - 7 is a mix of CC, panic spells (e.g. fade), and mana saving abilities like inner focus. Shift 1-5 takes up offensive spells as I rarely use them.

I'm pretty sure this is non-ideal, but it's kind of evolved that way. Unfortunately I find that as I'm levelling up for the first time I don't know the optimal position for the abilities and it's quite difficult to retrain myself later

I use Right Mouse to Strafe and Move about.

My Original UI evolved in a funny way. I had my main actionbar for my Caster Abilities. I had 2 vertical Bars on the right, One with Buffs and one with Heals, Including many ranks.

I still have that on my feral but have slightly changed my Resto so healing is on main actionbar.

I may do an article on my UI soon;)
