WotLK - When to stop PVE raiding?

As Razor has mentioned we are trying to start a Raiding Guild focusing on 10 man raids which seemed to be a good idea, particularly with all raid instances in WotLK to have both 10 man and 25 man versions.

However, I have to admit that I have become very frustrated (mmm is "disgusted" too strong a word?) already with what appears to be a high level of apathy to even start raiding.  As I have asked myself why so many have demonstrated such a total lack of support and enthusiasm I couldn't help but think that perhaps the reason is that everyone is already giving up on raiding knowing that sooner or later WotLK will be out.  Meh maybe they are just inconsiderate too.

But that brings me to the question so many ask.  With a new expansion coming out when should all the PVE'ers stop raiding? (or fail to even start in our case)

I remember clearly the months leading up to the Burning Crusade expansion.  I was in a serious 40 man raiding Guild and I was very surprised that in the month to six weeks before expansion almost everyone stopped raiding and started chasing the easy epics from pvp which were introduced just before BC (AND were all useless within hours of BC being launched hehe).  While I stood night after night in Ironforge (I hate pvp) I couldn't help but wonder why so many lost their desire for raiding and I think I came up with the answer.  Lol or at least one answer.  I think that it all comes down to WHY people actually raid, and I think there are three (3) categories or types of raiders, and when they should stop raiding for WotLK depends very much on the class.  Those groups are as follows:

1.  The Pixel Hunters

Those that are just after the phat lootz.  I think these people should give up raiding right now and get ready for WotLK.  Getting gear from raiding is so slow in comparison to other matters now, and these people would be far more satisfied pvp'ing for those easy epics, or doing badge runs in heroics etc to get the badge gear.  Don't worry about their guildmates, don't worry about everybody else, but go and help themselves to easy loot, after all that is why they play.

2.  The Memory Hunters

These are the players that raid for the memories, or the challenges.  They play to face new challenges (when they are actually challenges) and to beat them.  To face difficult encounters and situations and to overcome them and to get that feeling (which of course grows with each story telling) of the time they did this, or the time they did that.  These players need like minded people who understanding and get just as much thrill out of each encounter.  These are the ones that should raid up until the very night of WotLK and try and get just one more boss down while they are still level 70.

3.  The Socialites

These are those that just want to have fun with other people in a MMO and don't really care what they do as long as they have someone to talk to and laugh with on Vent or TS etc.  I think that these PVE'ers should also give up raiding right now and go and hang with those that have stopped raiding for the easy pvp epics.  I say this, because I think that this is where the vast majority will go.

Those are my thoughts at least.  What do you think?

p.s  If you want to talk about this or many other topics, or hear the stories of the time I did this ......... then I am sure you will find me standing in IF for the month before WotLK.  Wait!  I might try Shat this time.

I'm in the memory camp. I desperately want to do some new bosses before inevitable apathy sets in. I want to Doomwalker and DoomLord Kazzak just for the memories also. I made a post on our realm forums asking if any groups were planning on doing these bosses, and didn't get a reply. It's disheartening.

So, right now, we'll probably never do Kael'Thas, so it's as far into Black Temple as possible - probably to the 3rd or 4th bosses I'm guessing.

It seems to me the general trend at the moment is to go as hard as ever.. probably more emphasis on the pvp for gear or badge runs, but it doesn't appear that they are purely for the sake of pixel hunting.

I don't think anyone is under the illusion that the gear will be useless by level 73-75.

It seems that people are rushing to gear up in the T6-like gear, in an attempt to see more of the raid content that would otherwise be out of their reach.

I am predicting a lull in raiding for a couple more weeks, then a slew of non-raiding guild toons trying to get raids... the expectation being that like with TBC, people wont revisit the old content, so see it now.

I'm with you dfv although you probably picked that from the tone of my post :)

And I do agree with you Gnomeaggedon on a couple of points. The general information is that the early gear in WotLK won't scale so much compared to T5/T6/Badge gear so it should last a bit longer. I also agree that most won't go back and see content they missed, so the only chance to see it will be when it is reworked to fit the new 10/25 mans such as Naxx.

I really am excited as everyone else about WotLK, I just hope I can get to continue to have as much fun as possible and gather as many memories as I can before it comes along.

Thanks for the responses!
