Learn2Play

In my last post I mentioned that I thought the Druid would be the class I would recommend for a new player. I thought I would look into this in a little more Depth. My first characters were Rogue, Warlock , Mage then Druid. Let's look at each class.

Warrior.

This is a good choice to start with. Mail armor gives you good survivability and the Hack and Slash style of play is not too hard to pick up. Charging Critters is also a fun way to speed up your travels. With no healing abilities, food does become important and it's a good idea to take up cooking. I believe the Fury tree is the spec of choice for leveling. Playing a warrior could lead you to Enh Shaman, Rogue or Feral Druid.

Warlock.

I would call this an advanced class that's a little harder to learn. Fairly early on, you need to get your head around Pet Management. This can be both good and bad. if you get the hang of it, it can dramatically increase your survivability. Demon Armor and the Imp (Stam Buff) or Void Walker (Tank) also increase your survivability. Demonology is the tree of choice for early leveling. Playing a Warlock could lead you to Hunters or other Casters.

Shaman.

The first of the Hybrids, Shamans are a good starting class. With the choice of Melee DPS, Caster DPS or Healing, it suits a wide variety of play styles. Ghost Wolf at level 20 makes for faster traveling, which is always a bonus. Healing can reduce down time especially as an Enhancement Shammy where you can save Mana during Melee. Enhancement is the tree of choice for leveling. Playing a Shaman could lead you to Druids, Paladins, Warriors, Rogues and possibly some casters as well.

Rogue.

Initially very similar to Warriors, rogues make a good starting class. Especially with the ability to Stealth. It is possible to skip many obstacles by simply stealthing past. They generally have a little more downtime that warriors because they can only wear leather armor. I believe a Combat/Subtlety build is ideal for leveling. Rogues can lead you to Warriors, Druids and Enhancement Shammies.

Priest.

This can be rather a challenging class to learn. Combining Healing and Caster DPS with Cloth armor, early on survivability can be an issue. Shadow is the leveling tree. Playing a Priest can lead to any Caster DPS or Healing class.

Paladin.

Our next hybrid, paladins are a reasonable class to start with. Combining Mail Armor with healing makes it a great survivability class. I personally found Seals and Judgments to be annoying though. The Ret tree is ideal for early levels but ones you get close to the 40's, Prot becomes a lot better. Playing a Paladin can lead to Shaman, Druids or Warriors and to some extent other healing classes.

Mage.

The Glass Cannon. This can be a very popular starter class. The high damage usually takes care of most adversaries, though the cloth armor can be an issue early on. The Frost tree has some more CC/survivability but you give up the big hits that fire allows. Most people play fire to level though I went frost as I found it more fun. Playing a mage would lead you to any other caster DPS.

Hunter.

Similar to the Warlock in play, a hunter is a good choice to start with. The first 10 levels can be tedious but when you get your pet, things move along well. I believe Beast Mastery is the Leveling tree. Playing a Hunter could lead to the Warlock.

Druid.

Druids are a fairly easy class to start with. The first 10 levels get a little boring with Wrath Spam. The next 10 levels usually combine Wrath Spam with Bear form and makes for great survivability. Level 20 is where things really pick up. Kitty form will handle most adversaries you come up against and you have the fallback position of Bear Form if you get in trouble. Almost no down time involved at all as a little HoT between some fights is enough to top you off. Druids are one of the few classes where you would respec early on. I usually play Balance to level 19 and then respec to feral at 20. Playing a druid can lead to any other class except Hunters and Warlocks.

Note!

I do not claim to know everything about all the classes and i have no doubt made a few mistakes and assumptions here as well. Fell free to correct me or share your ideas in the comments. I also should note here, this is more of a FIRST class perspective, as not many people play thier first classes.

No, affliction is the leveling tree of choice. Demonology only becomes viable in the mid 50s when the FG can be specced for.

Destro is viable once Fel armor is available but is still slower then affliction or demonology.
